Ans:

★ Electric current is flowing towards the X end of the straight conductor. OR Electric current is flowing from bottom to top of the straight conductor.

Right Hand Thumb Rule :

Imagine that you are holding a current-carrying straight conductor in your right hand such that the thumb points towards the direction of current ; then your fingers will wrap around the conductor in the direction of the field lines of the magnetic field.

Q13.

On the basis of the given circuit arrangement, answer the following questions:

(a) What happens to the rod AB when the key K is closed and why?

(b) Name and state the rule that determines this behaviour of the rod AB in the above situation.

Ans:

(a) The rod AB gets displaced from its original position because it experiences a force when placed in external magnetic field.

(b) Fleming's Left Hand Rule.

Stretch the thumb, fore finger and middle finger of your left hand such that they are mutually perpendicular. If forefinger points in the direction of magnetic field, second finger in the direction of current, then the thumb will point in the direction of motion or force acting on the conductor.

Q14. The pattern of magnetic field due to a current carrying wire depends upon the shape made by that wire. Justify.

Ans:

★ Magnetic field pattern for a current carrying straight conductor - concentric circles.

★ Magnetic field pattern for a current carrying solenoid - magnetic field lines similar to that of a bar magnet.

★ Magnetic field pattern for a current carrying circular loop - a pair of concentric circles with parallel straight lines at the centre.

ii) What is the role of prism Z?

Ans:

i) Yes / The spectrum of light forms on the screen

ii) Prism Z disperses this white light into 7 colours and hence we see the spectrum of light on the screen.

Q4. In the given diagram, which angle is bigger among the angles r1, and r2? Give a reason.

Ans:

★ Angle r2 is larger.

★ Because light speeds up and bends away from the normal line when exiting the glass into the air.

 Ans. : (A) maximum in Q

Q12. Observe the below figure showing the refraction of light through a glass prism

Ans:

★ The angle represented as ∠x is called the Angle of Deviation.

Q13. Glass prisms A, B and C are arranged as shown in the figure given below. When a ray of white light is passed through prism A, does the spectrum of light form on the screen ? Give reason.

Ans. :

★ Yes / The spectrum of light forms on the screen.

★ Prism A disperses the white light into 7 colurs, Prism B recombines the 7 colours of the spectrum to form the white light and Prism C disperses this white light into 7 colours and hence we see the spectrum of light on the screen.

Q14. A person who has a defect of the eye as shown in the below figure purchases a spectacle having lens of – 2·0D power. Is this lens suitable to rectify the eye defect of that person ? Analyse.

Ans. :

★ This lens is not suitable for that person’s defect of eye.

★ Light rays from a closeby object are focussed at a point behind the retina.

★ Therefore it is farsightedness and it is corrected by using a convex lens of appropriate power in spectacle.

★ Lens of – 2·0 D power is a concave lens and that does not rectify this defect.

Q17. Observe the given incomplete diagram.
